Israeli Soldiers Breaking The Silence on the Occupation of Palestine

Former Israeli paratrooper Avner Gvaryahu, now an activist with Breaking The Silence explains to Green Left Weekly’s Peter Boyle how 850 former Israeli soldiers have given testimony about the gross injustices against the Palestinian people they have witnessed and made to participate in as part of Israel’s military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. He was visiting Australia to promote the book “Our Harsh Logic” (Scribe Publications)

  1. What an excellent interview. I think it’s how cogently he makes his points: you can’t be expected to behave morally in an immoral situation. It takes a special kind of person to realize that – someone who isn’t willing to sacrifice his humanity. What I really like is how articulately he can state all this. Almost every military man I know who has who has become an anti-war activist says more or less the same thing. I can’t think of anyone who can make a more effective anti-war activist than a military man.

I spend 18 months as a civilian employee in Vietnam. One soldier said to me, that when you discover that the “enemy” is your “friend” (i.e., someone who is just like you), then it’s all over.

    • Hi Gritzle,

Yes, his articulacy impressed me, too. And his heart, wow.

I think the moral of the story is: if armed soldiers occupy your home, see them as your sons/brothers, offer them drink and food and creature comforts as you would your family members… which they are. This would disarm (no pun intended) them in an instant.

  2. The epitome of dark energy in action. Our harsh logic indeed. As it’s said, ‘it’s always darkest before the dawn’ and I am soo ready for daybreak.

  3. Great interview. Very articulate & well organized in his thinking & presentation. It’s much needed when it comes to this subject. I pray for peace every day. I’m so ready for this madness to be over.

  4. * “Compared with itself-each thing is both great & small”-(anaxagoras)…this mountain of a man & his compatriots, exemplify the illusion of barriers to the’ truth’…it simply ‘is’….’big truth-small truth’…it just can’t be divided…only prevaricated in the minds of men.
…….Once someone experiences ‘Love’…it reveals in an instance- the ultimate clarity & virtue of compassion… not blind aggression…& kindness rather than cruelty…that person is standing in the light of an ‘awakened’ consciousness, that ‘sees’ in overview of percipience, the contrived density of our enslavement & the ongoing consequences of our perverted ‘zombie snail folly’… trapped in a parasitized global labyrinth.
…….There are children that are deformed intentionally from birth & destined to a life as ‘organ-grinder monkeys’…eliciting shekels of pity… only to be robbed at the end of the day by their masters….such are the invisible, shackled deformities & infliction’s, seared in our minds from birth, by a ponerological conspiracy of ruthless, premeditated design, for millennia.
…….The apocalypse(uncovering), of All that can no longer be denied via the naked courage exhibited & posited by these Israeli-‘citizens of the world’ that had to face almost insurmountable odds, coming from the ‘belly of the beast’ itself…is a candle lit & a glimmer of light in this, the darkest hour before the dawn of humanity… a cliche perhaps, but a vibrant possibility as the antithesis of the “David & Goliath” ‘awakening'(in reverse)…none the less.
