Great toon! This one packs an essential message to the unawakened members of society. I forwarded it to my father back when I first discovered it. Thanks for posting, Zen.
The Great American Dream is no different than the Great Aussie Dream, problem is, you have to be asleep to have dreams!!!
Wakey, wakey, hand off snakey!
American dream is an idea which suggests that all people can achieve success through hard work and have the potential(worth) to live successful lives. Actually a lot of people wish that their belief of american dream will be come true while they endure hardworking period. But the ideal notion of the idea that hard work brings success to people in the end is clearly not true in this play. The belief about fair opportunity of success is useless and unfair, instead of, we are facing only an savage competition system in capitalism.
A main focus of the play is endless hunt for hot leads. The Glengarry Highlands leads, are “premium” leads which attracts attentions of buyers strongly so it is precious to salesman to be a top salesman. But they are primarily offered to top salesmen, or those who are most likely to complete the deal successfully. Therefore, there are a natural perception of privilege and a cycle of success in society. Namely, top salesmen will head for more high level but the others will come down.
There is also an contest(=competition) in which the winner gets a new Cadillac, and the loser gets fired in this play. The salesmen have no boundary between the work time and own private time because they do business activities all day. These men do everything they can in order to make the sale under any circumstance to write their name on the board although the methods which they choose are impure. for example, to keep the sale Levene acts a very important client to help Roma keep the deal. This shows that this dishonest behaviour is reasonable and fair in work environment to keep the deal. another is that Levene tries to offer bribe to william in order to get hot lead although actually he doesn’t real enough money paying the cost of leads. and the other is that in extreme way, moss and Levene commit a crime(robbery) to sell leads and to get out of risk to be fired.
In its capitalism environment, the people must have to do whatever they can to survive. In contrary to belief of the American Dream, american system of capitalism where money make equal the value(worth) of success and happiness is full of endless dishonest, destructive, no equal opportunity and no hope in reality. That is, American dream is so ideal notion in comparison real society.
Excellent!!! The ultimate carteltoon.
