* Have to admit I was an 18 yr old Canadian in 1969 & this ongoing horror was extremely well HIDDEN!… & never came up in the daily discourse, other than a topic of “drunken denigration & ridicule” Now I feel somewhat like the German citizenry who lived beside the concentration camps, during the second world war, avowing their innocence. I simply never connected the dots with the mature mind experience of an adult.
… I was mentally & physically terrorized, raped & abused as a child myself!… & have had PTSD ‘dog’ me, all thru my life & sought solace in alcohol (now 8 yrs sober)…thus I have TOTAL EMPATHY for said: ‘drunken indians’…the TRUTH of all this is ‘mind boggling’ to any sane individual & complete atonement from all perpetrators, out into the light of day, is the only way forward… in my humbled opinion.

yes this cruelty is undeniable,
my mother endured a ‘schooling’ from catholic nuns in the 1940′s,
she coped through atheism then art,
not the same fate as the Indians,
but I have total empathy with their plight also.
They are continuing with the genocide by removing up to 60% percent of native children from their homes under the Child Protection Services banner. Yep, 60%. Further, although the Indians are less than 1% of the population, 25% of those in prison are Canadian Indians. There is a genocide going on right now. A few years ago when there was an outbreak of the Flu in the northern reservations, the Federal Minister of Health Department delivered body bags as their response. Not nurses, not medicines, only body bags.

On Rosebud Reservation, right up until the fifties, if you didn’t go to Catholic school or church, you didn’t eat. Plain and simple as that, and if you were caught attending night cult ceremonies your meager rations were cut off.
I heard that many Lakota who survived the holocaust, poked out their eyes with awls, because there was nothing left of beauty in their lives. That’s what happens when you rip a people out of sonic reality and imprison them in a concentration camp.
A few years ago, the local newspaper carried an article called, ‘In the shadow of the cross’. It was about the sexual molestation, rape and murder of Indian children in government and church schools. I wonder what would be found if they dug up the school grounds, here on Rosebud? They would no doubt, find hundreds of children’s bodies, like they did in Canada.
Today, Indian people are riddled with diabetes running at 80%, heart disease, kidney failure, and the highest rate of lupus in the country. The land is littered with rubbish, junk cars, old refrigerators and stoves. Come to the rez and see the forgotten people for yourselves. See the drunks waiting outside the liquor store, begging for money for alcohol, another bottle to put them out of their misery for a little while.
This America is soaked in the blood of the innocent and the karma will come home to rest.
